Tourism is one of Ireland's vital industries. Up to 200,000 people work in the wider tourism and hospitality industry. Over 6.5 million overseas visitors are attracted annually, contributing €4.3 billion to the Irish economy. A further 7 million domestic trips generate €1.3 billion. When combined the tourism industry generated €5.6 billion revenue in 2013. Of this amount, it is estimated that €1.4 billion directly benefits the Exchequer through taxation.

Shannon airport Duty Free is getting a facelift

The Irish Times reported today that Shannon airport Duty Free is getting a 1 million Euro facelift:

Shannon was the location of the worlds first tax-free booze and cigarettes shop in 1947.  Passengers no doubt needed a swig or two of the hard stuff before taking off on the bone-shakers of that era.

The glory days of duty-free might have faded, but the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has decided to upgrade the duty-free offering in Shannon. This includes a facelift of the perfume and cosmetics area, and the installation of a dedicated Irish whiskey store. An Irish Memories souvenir outlet, a new giftware store from Glenaran and an area devoted to Irish food are also part of the package.

DAA retail director Paul Neeson says this will “radically improve” the shopping experience at Shannon and “grow” its sales.
