Irish Ferries - Member Profile
Irish Ferries is part of the Irish Continental Group and operates extensive passenger and ro-ro ferries between Ireland and Britain and Ireland and France.
In the passenger and freight ferry market, the strategy is to focus on short routes with high utilisation of ships. On the Irish Sea, the ferry services are operated between Dublin-Holyhead and Rosslare-Pembroke, while France is served by sailings from Rosslare to Cherbourg and Roscoff.
On the Dublin-Holyhead route two ferries operate, Ulysses, the worlds largest car ferry with a capacity for 1342 cars, 240 trucks and 1900 passengers, and Dublin Swift fast ferry which offers a speedy crossing in 109 minutes.
The Irish Continental Group was formed in 1972 to operate a direct ferry link from Ireland to Continental Europe. In 1992 the Group greatly increased the scale of its operations through the acquisition of the B & I Line, then owned by the Government. This broadened the Group’s activities to include the short sea links with the U.K. and also extended the Group’s operations into container transport and port operations.
Since 1992 the Group has invested over €450 million in new vessels, port infrastructure, and acquisitions and the Group is now the leading Irish Maritime Transport Operator.
The B & I was a founder member of ITIC in 1984 and Irish Ferries has continued this long tradition of leadership in the Irish Tourist Industry.
