Shannon Development - Member Profile

Shannon Free Airport Development Company, or Shannon Development as it is known today, was set up in 1959, as a semi-state body to promote Shannon International Airport. Ambitious plans were put in place for the development of the Region as an industrial and tourism location. At that time almost all of the traffic was transit and the Shannon Free Zone did not exist. The company’s key role is to lead and drive the broader economic development of the Region, covering the counties of Limerick and Clare, as well as South Offaly and North Tipperary.

Its goals are to:

- Enable the Shannon region to achieve its full development potential.
- Ensure that the potential of the less developed areas is realised.
- Create demand for the Shannon Airport Gateway.

As the Tourism Authority for the Shannon Region its’ main tourism activities embrace:

Developing tourism marketing programmes and new tourism products in the Shannon Region, in conjunction with the industry.
Managing commercial tourism businesses, e.g. medieval banquets and day visitor attractions, through a wholly owned subsidiary company Shannon Heritage Ltd. Currently, it has eight day visitor attractions and four evening entertainment venues.
Providing a range of quality tourism projects and seeking to secure investment in the region.
Providing information for visitors on the region and its products. In this context it operates 12 Tourist offices throughout the region.
