ITIC urges retention of lower VAT rate

  • One of the most tourism friendly initiatives taken by Government in recent years was the lowering of VAT from 13.5% to 9% on most tourism services.
  • It was an acknowledgement that the contribution of tourism extends well beyond its direct effects on employment and economic activity.
  • The reduction was passed on to the consumer helping to restore some of Ireland’s lost competitiveness, a fact borne out by the substantial improvement in visitors’ perception of value for money in Ireland.
  • It has delivered 9,000 jobs in the industry, and many more indirectly.
