Our Ocean Wealth

  • The Government, through the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, is undertaking a major study on what is generally regarded as Ireland’s most under-appreciated asset, its Marine resource.
  • The idea is to develop an Integrated Marine Plan and harness our ocean wealth and use the potential of the marine economy to create jobs.  Marine tourism has a big role to play in all this.
  • A little known fact is that taking our seabed into account, Ireland is one of the LARGER E.U. states.  The state of Ireland consists of 90,000 sq kilometres of a land resource and 900,000 sq kilometres of a marine resource. Ireland’s coastline of 7,500 kilometres is larger than that of most European coastlines.
