Visa Waiver Programme

  • Last July the Government announced an initiative on Visas, whereby persons granted leave to enter the UK as a general visitor would be able to travel to Ireland without the requirement to obtain an Irish Visa.  The initiative was intended to attract visitors over the period of the London Olympics.
  • It was intended that the scheme would expire in October 2012.  This is now being considered by the Department of Justice.
  • ITIC welcomed the initiative at the time but pointed out that the trial period was too short to have any meaningful impact.  Long distance trips from emerging markets are planned well in advance, and for this reason ITIC is now proposing to Government that the present waiver scheme be extended for a period of 5 years.
