Research tells us that beautiful scenery is at the top of the list of motivations for overseas tourists when they are thinking of selecting Ireland as a holiday destination. Again, at the end of their visit they single out beautiful scenery as the prime reason to recommend Ireland to others.
It is clear therefore that we take great risks with the future prosperity of tourism if we allow other, possibly transient economic activities, to take over or diminish assets that are vital for tourism. Ireland’s natural environment, landscape and scenery top the list of such assets.
ITIC has just published a position paper called, Protecting the Irish Environment and Landscape – a critical issue for Irish Tourism. This was prepared by CHL Consulting Company, with significant input from Fáilte Ireland and from Doyle + O’Troithigh Landscape Architecture. ITIC spoke with Michael Counahan, Managing Director of CHL Consulting Co, about the paper’s main findings.
